Dr. Henry Iwinski discusses the Shriners Medical Center move to the UK HealthCare campus
Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center – Lexington moves to its new facility across from Chandler Hospital in April 2017.
Here’s what you need to know about the move:
The new Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center – Lexington (Shriners) will be an outpatient surgical and rehabilitation center.
Shriners leased land from UK for its new space. It remains a separate entity and has not merged with or been bought or managed by UK.
Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine faculty members from the UK College of Medicine continue to serve as the pediatric orthopaedic specialists for Shriners.
The proximity of Shriners and the Kentucky Children’s Hospital (KCH) will facilitate collaboration – Shriners’ pediatric orthopaedic expertise working with KCH’s specialty and subspecialty care for children with complex conditions.
As of April 17, Shriners pediatric orthopaedic patients will be seen in the new Shriners facility. There will be a period of transition where some UK pediatric orthopaedic patients will be seen in both the current clinic and the new Shriners facility. All pediatric orthopaedic patients will eventually be seen in the new Shriners facility.
Inpatient care for pediatric orthopaedic patients will be provided at KCH.
UK Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences will lease the top two floors to house an eye clinic, called UK Advanced Eye Care, and faculty offices.
Patients and families visiting the new facility will be able to use a ground-level drop-off area and will have access to the adjacent parking garage.
