Dr. Jason Poteet - Central Texas Urology
I’m a Central Texas native; I grew up in Temple, Texas so not too far down the road. Straight to Baylor University in Waco and then I went down to Galveston- University of Galveston Medical Branch. Training was in Shreveport, Louisiana at LSU Health Science Center. When you’re in medical school, you kind of figure out things you don’t want to do more than what you have an exact idea of what you do want to; and so when I worked with a radiologist, I fell asleep during the day in the dark room so, you know, I wasn’t going to be a very good radiologist. So you kind of figure out things you don’t want to do and kind of landed in urology and really figured out that I liked it a lot. You get a large variety, you know, anywhere from you know, nine month olds to ninety year olds; women, men, children, everything in between, we do everything from big seven-eight-hour cancer cases; they’re really complex down to you know, minor office procedures. The favorite part about urology, as opposed to some of the other surgery specialties, is we get to see a lot of our patients over and over again, so we get to develop long-term relationships. You know, some of our prostate cancer patients have been in our practice for 20-30 years so you really get to know people and you know, having somebody you know bring you a Christmas card or being able to ask about their kids whenever they come in, you know, you get to kind of experience that. The primary cares usually only get, surgeons don’t get, so we kind of get to blend both. I got married in medical school; my wife and I have been married for almost nine years this April and we just had out first child; we have a seven-month old daughter at home so that’s been a big life change so it’s a lot of fun. Free time I like to do a lot of outdoor activities – hunting, fishing. We have a ranch about an hour and a half from here so we’re active on that as well.
