Bilateral LASIK Surgery | Mark Whitten MD
This is a typical patient with a history of myopia, also called nearsightedness, who has LASIK performed to both eyes to improve distance vision.
LASIK reshapes the surface of the cornea to change the refractive power, or focusing power, of the eye. After a corneal flap is created, the excimer laser is used to uniquely reshape the surface of the cornea. As you will see, the flap is then repositioned after the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped.
I had my own LASIK performed in Canada before it was approved in the United States around 1994. The procedure has changed very little since the mid-1990s.
The flap is created with a hinge. This hinge is usually on the side of the nose. One advantage is that the flap can be perfectly repositioned after the corneal ablation is completed.
After the flap is created, the flap is lifted out of the way exposing the underlying cornea. The excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. This is also called the corneal ablation. The amount of ablation or reshaping depends upon your refraction.
After the ablation is completed, the cornea is repositioned.
The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes, is performed as an outpatient.

This is the second of a 3 part video testimonial uploaded by Stacy about her LASIK experience with Dr. Mark Whitten and Whitten Laser Eye.
Stacy came to Whitten Laser Eye after years of intolerance to contact lenses. Her eyes were getting drier and it was becoming more difficult for her to use lenses. Finally, after years of shopping around, she chose to have LASIK.
This is Stacy's first day after having had LASIK performed to both eyes. She remarks how easy the whole process was: no pain, went home and slept for a few hours, then had dinner. This is typical of what we usually hear from our patients.
Stacy saw Dr. Rose for her post-operative visit in our Chevy Chase office. Immediately after surgery, vision was slightly cloudy, but cleared by the next morning. This, too, is quite common.
For Stacy, suffering from dry eye and the nuisance (intolerance) of contact lens wear, LASIK is a game changer. Stacy is now contact lens free!
