Dr. Raul Lopez describes the da Vinci ® Surgical System and how general surgeons use it for general surgery.

From the general surgery standpoint, explains Dr. Lopez, robotic surgery has just become very popular. And since general surgeons do a tremendous variety of abdominal surgeries, we have found that this instrument is a very precise instrument.

Although it is called a robot, it really isn't that. It is a precise, computerized machine that we completely control the movements of. It it set up in such a way that it is articulated in its parts, and there is freedom of movement. It is very precise movement because it is computer-guided.

We feel that eventually, with the da Vinci device, we are going to be able to make less incisions, do more colon surgery with this device, and be more precise in the dissection or removal of these organs.

Dr. Raul Lopez describes the symptoms of gall bladder disease and treatment options.

Gallbladder disease mimics a lot of different pathology, says Dr. Lopez. For example, the classical presentation is that somebody shows up with severe right upper quadrant abdominal pain. Along with some other symptoms, this could strongly indicate gallstones.

However, other gallbladder issues can cause symptoms that appear to be more like gastritis or peptic ulcer disease.

Gallbladder disease, left untreated, may be very dangerous, advises Dr. Lopez, because of the strong likelihood of infection. If you have recently developed possible symptoms of gallstones, get care immediately.
